Breathable Car Covers
Breathability is the least visible specification on a cover and the one that decides whether the car underneath is better or worse off after a winter.
Where the moisture comes from
Ground evaporation, rain carried in on the car, and the car's own residual heat. Under a sealed cover all of it condenses on the fabric's underside overnight and sits on the paint, in the shuts and around the trim.
How breathable fabric works
A membrane with pores far smaller than a water droplet but larger than a vapour molecule lets vapour out while keeping liquid water out. It is the same principle as a technical rain jacket, applied at car scale.
Keeping breathability alive
Dirt blocks pores. A cover washed occasionally with a proper cover wash keeps breathing; one washed with household detergent, or never washed at all, does not.

- Wash on a cool, gentle cycle with a dedicated cover wash rather than household detergent, which strips water repellency and blocks the breathable membrane. Never use fabric softener, never tumble dry, and reproof once water stops beading on the outer face.
- Can I use an indoor cover outside for a few days?
- No. Indoor covers are dust-tight but not waterproof or UV-stable, so a week outside will soak through and begin degrading the fabric. If the car moves outdoors, move it to an outdoor line.
