Hail damage lands where the panels are flat and horizontal: roof, bonnet, boot lid. That is also where a padded cover does most of its work, spreading the energy of an impact over a wide area of foam rather than letting it dent a single point of steel or aluminium.
How padding actually helps
No fabric stops a large hailstone outright. What a foam core does is convert a sharp, concentrated impact into a broad, slow one — the same principle as packaging. Small and medium stones are absorbed entirely; large ones are reduced from a dent to a mark on the cover.
Wind arrives with the hail
A padded cover is heavier and catches more wind than a thin one, so anchoring matters more, not less. Underbody straps through the wheel arches and a cable lock through the grommets keep the cover on the car during the gust front that precedes most hailstorms.
Keeping it ready
Storm covers only work if they are fitted before the storm, which means storage matters: keep the cover in the boot in its bag, folded roof-panel outermost, so it goes on in the direction you unroll it.
